Description/Responsibilities

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville invites applications for the position of Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. The Dean is the chief academic and administrative officer of the College and reports to the Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs. The Dean will have the opportunity to build on the breadth and strengths of the College to advance the College to a higher level of academic distinction and national recognition.

The Dean is responsible for developing, implementing, and supporting the teaching, scholarly, creative, and service missions of the College. These responsibilities include providing leadership, administering the policies established by the University and College, fostering faculty and staff development, maintaining rigor and accreditation of programs, and facilitating collaboration and communication within the College, the University, and the community. The Dean implements best practices in student learning and is committed to innovation in teaching and academic programming. The Dean supports diverse educational contexts and builds inclusive partnerships among the College’s many units including the humanities, fine and performing arts, social sciences, physical sciences, and life sciences. To advance the educational mission of the University, the Dean promotes 1) student recruitment, learning, and retention; 2) the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in every aspect of its operation; and 3) the University’s Strategic plan, including a focus on community engagement and sustainability. The Dean supports interdisciplinarity and helps advance faculty goals in research, creative activities, and grant writing. The Dean effectively and equitably manages the College’s budget and resources while facilitating the generation of new funds. The Dean works with College personnel, including tenure track and non-tenure track faculty, and administrative/professional and civil service staff, maintaining a productive and collegial environment.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is a public, doctoral-professional university with an enrollment of approximately 13,000 students. The University offers 110 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Schools of Business, Education, Health, and Human Behavior, Engineering, Nursing, Pharmacy and Dental Medicine. The College of Arts and Sciences offers more than 50 undergraduate and graduate degree programs delivered by some 300 faculty members to approximately 6,000 students. Situated on 2,660 acres of beautiful woodland atop bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River bottomland, the campus is just 25 minutes northeast from the cultural and business communities of downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have an earned doctorate or appropriate terminal degree from an accredited university and be qualified for academic appointment and eligible for tenure as a full professor in one of the departments of the College. Eligibility for tenure as a full professor would require a scholarly record of distinction, a commitment to teaching excellence, and a demonstrated commitment to service. Qualified candidates will have significant administrative and budgetary experience in academia with evidence of strong leadership, communication, and collaboration skills, as well as a demonstrated ability to foster excellence in scholarly and creative activities and student learning.

Source of Funds: State

Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Terms of Appointment: Continuing, tenure track fiscal year appointment beginning July 1, 2020.
