In the current political election cycle, labor solidarity often faces significant challenges because of American individualism, where personal achievement and self-reliance are prized above collective effort. In such environments, the ethos of personal responsibility can undermine the sense of unity necessary for effective collective action. In general, American workers are socialized to accept neoliberal ideas that they will do better in negotiations for better working conditions and equitable promotions as an army of one. False consciousness in the workplace prioritizes individual advancement over shared goals, leading to fragmented efforts and weakened bargaining power. Unions have difficulty in many college and university workplaces to cultivate labor solidarity because it involves emphasizing how collective action can enhance the success of all ranks of faculty. Join us for the inaugural PSA Lightning Talks Series where our presenters will discuss the ethics of solidarity in the workplace from a Sociological lens.
