The current landscape of laws governing illegal substances in the United States has undergone significant transformation, reflecting evolving societal attitudes, public health considerations, and economic factors. The presenters in the third PSA Lightning talk will examine the shift from punitive approaches, characterized by stringent drug prohibition and criminalization, to more progressive policies emphasizing decriminalization, harm reduction, and legalization. The presenters also discuss the implications of these changes on criminal justice and social equity, suggesting that while progress has been made, challenges remain in addressing the historical injustices associated with drug laws as they intersect with race, gender and class groups in the United States.

Our featured presenters are Scott Akins of Oregon State University, and Alex Wyse of UC San Francisco with our host/moderator being Manuel Barajas of CSU Sacramento.
