Dear Members of the Pacific Sociology Association,
Happy New Year. Best of Health and Happiness for 2025. I am writing to invite you to
join members of the PSA Executive Leadership for an urgent and insightful virtual
community conversation on the wide-ranging implications of the executive orders signed by President Donald Trump in the past 48 hours. These orders touch on issues critical to our field—including higher education, immigration, the environment, sexual
expression and identity, foreign policy, crime and punishment, and border control.
This Zoom-based forum on Friday, January 31st, 2025 @ 12:00 pm Pacific time, will
provide a space for collaborative dialogue on the potential impacts of these policies on
our classrooms, institutions, and the communities we serve. Together, we will explore
the pressing question: What strategies and responses can we develop to address
these changes effectively and support our students in understanding and navigating their implications?
As sociologists, we are uniquely positioned to analyze the intersections of policy, social
structures, and individual lives. This community conversation will allow us to continue to share insights, resources, disappointments, and practical approaches for addressing
these topics in our teaching and research, fostering critical engagement among our
students and empowering them to take informed action. The forum will take place on Friday, January 31, 2025 @ 12:00 pm Pacific time, via Zoom.
We look forward to your insights and contributions to this essential conversation. Let us come together to support each other, our students, and the communities we are
committed to serving.
